Hot Wheels “Lights Out” Reaction-Time IoT based Experience

To recreate the thrill of a race start in an interactive format, NXT collaborated with Frank Wild to design and develop a multiplayer reaction-time game for Hot Wheels. Inspired by the iconic race-start moment from Formula One, the activation challenged visitors to test their reflexes in a competitive environment where milliseconds determined the winner.

The experience was installed at the Albert Park Circuit during the Australian Grand Prix weekend and ran for four days, attracting approximately 5,500 participants. The project combined physical racing infrastructure with digital systems, IoT hardware, and real-time interaction design to create a seamless and engaging race simulation.

Experience Concept

The activation was designed as a six-player competitive reaction game, recreating the excitement of a Formula 1 “lights out” start.

Participants began their journey by registering through a web-based application. During registration, users entered their name and email address for data capture and selected their preferred car from a collection of eight Hot Wheels models. Once six players had registered, the system automatically synchronised them into a single race session.

Each player was assigned a dedicated racing lane where they stood in front of a plinth equipped with a large red reaction button and an iPad interface. The iPad displayed the player’s car selection and race status while the button served as the primary input device during the race start.

The experience began with an F1-style lights sequence that built anticipation among participants. As the red lights illuminated one by one, players prepared for the moment the lights would go out. The instant the lights turned off, players pressed their reaction button as quickly as possible.

The button press recorded the reaction time and simultaneously triggered the release of the player’s Hot Wheels car onto the racing track.

Physical Track Engineering

One of the most technically complex aspects of the installation was the development of the custom multi-lane racing track.

The track was engineered using a combination of 3D-printed structural components to ensure consistency across all six racing lanes. Each lane featured a controlled gate mechanism connected to a solenoid release system.

When a participant pressed the reaction button, the system activated the solenoid mechanism, instantly releasing the car down the track. The engineering had to ensure synchronised release timing across all lanes so that the reaction time recorded digitally matched the physical race outcome.

Finish-line sensors detected the cars reaching the end of the track, enabling accurate race completion detection and visual feedback.


IoT Integration and System Architecture

The activation relied on a tightly integrated IoT ecosystem connecting multiple devices and control systems.

The setup included:

• Six iPads running the multiplayer web application
• Individual lane credentials to map players to specific lanes
• A central laptop controlling the race engine
• DMX-controlled lighting for the race-start sequence
• Red button buzzers for reaction input
• Solenoid triggers controlling car release mechanisms

All six iPads were synchronised through the central system so that once a session started, every participant experienced the race start at the exact same moment.

The DMX lighting system played a crucial role in recreating the dramatic race start. The sequential red lights were programmed to mimic professional motorsport start signals, increasing anticipation before the final “lights out” moment.


Real-Time Results and Audience Engagement

A large LED screen displayed the race results immediately after each session. The screen showed player names, reaction times, and rankings, highlighting the fastest reaction among the six participants.

To enhance the experience further, the system also displayed a slow-motion replay of the finish line, allowing participants and spectators to relive the race outcome visually.

At the end of each race, players received a printed sticker featuring their racer name and recorded reaction time, providing a personalised takeaway from the experience.


Outcome

The Hot Wheels Lights-Out Experience successfully blended mechanical engineering, IoT systems, and digital interaction design to create a high-energy multiplayer activation.

By combining 3D-printed track engineering, sensor-based triggers, real-time lighting control, and digital race logic, the installation demonstrated how physical and digital systems can be seamlessly integrated to create immersive, competitive experiences.

Over the four-day event, the activation attracted thousands of participants and delivered an engaging motorsport-inspired challenge that captured the excitement of racing in a format accessible to audiences of all ages.
